Review of Pamostick Regular

Pamostick Regular: My extended arm I don’t even feel on my back

I consider a telescopic brush an essential part of my bouldering gear. It’s my extended arm, with which I can prepare a boulder even in places I can’t reach from the ground. Yes, I could always use a long stick and tape a small brush to it, but with the Pamostick I save both any material needed to make that one-time contraption — which isn't always available — and also the time to make it.

The Pamostick Regular telescopic brush fits my needs perfectly. First of all, I have to highlight its dimensions. When folded and with the head collapsed, it fits perfectly into the Fatman without sticking out, thus avoiding the risk of catching on trees or rocks while moving around. Fully extended, it lengthens my reach by up to 2.5 meters, which means that my total reach is enough to handle 98% of boulders comfortably.

I should also mention that I’ve only had it fully extended a few times. Of course, it always depends on the height of the boulders you prefer, but if you're not a die-hard highball bouldering fan, the Pamostick Regular will always be enough.

One of the biggest advantages of the brush is its weight. Considering the size, 560 g is a truly perfect number. When the brush is tucked into the pad, you won’t feel any weight difference while carrying it. That’s thanks to the lightweight (yet durable) aluminum from which the handle is made.

Another strong point of the brush is the easy possibility to replace the entire head. Pamo offers two different brushes (a smaller and a larger one), which you can swap as needed. To adapt the brush to the nature of the boulder and its holds, you can easily adjust the head to a different angle. This way, it covers the full range of profiles.

I also have to praise the bristles and the quality of how they’re embedded. The stiffness and density are very well chosen. Residual chalk comes off holds quickly and thoroughly. At the moment, I honestly can't recall a brush that performs better.

The system for stabilizing the handle at the desired length is simple. By slightly twisting both parts against each other, you can prepare the brush to the needed length. Sometimes the head twisted during intense brushing. But it all comes down to the feel with which you tighten the handle. Practice solved it all.

I must say that after a year of intense use, I haven’t found any weak points. No doubt — Japanese precision is unmistakable.
